Chapter 14

“Heard what?” Millie asked.

“Sharky never returned to the ship last night.”

Millie’s fork slipped out of her hand. “You’re kidding.”

“Nope. Sharky is M-I-A. Amit heard from one of the maintenance guys that he was scheduled to start his shift at six, and he never showed up.” Annette continued. “They checked the gangway records. He exited the ship yesterday but never got back on. Patterson already searched his cabin. There’s no sign of him anywhere. He’s not answering his cell phone or radio.”

“I…” Millie blinked rapidly, attempting to digest the disturbing news. “Maybe he quit.”

“Him quitting was my first thought, too.” Annette shrugged. “You can talk to Reef. I’m sure he has more information.”

Millie rubbed her chin thoughtfully; certain she’d been right all along to be suspicious of Svetlana. The woman was up to no good. Call it women’s intuition or her fine-tuned sleuthing instinct, but something about her had triggered warning bells. “Are…they going to look for him?”

“I don’t know. What I do know is that I’ve washed my hands of the whole thing. We tried to warn him. He not only ignored us but reported us to Donovan. He’s on his own.”

Their conversation drifted to the passengers who would be boarding later that day, but all the while, in the back of Millie’s mind, she couldn’t stop thinking about Sharky. True, he had not only reported them, but also outright accused the women of stalking him and told Millie to mind her own business.

It was possible he’d decided to walk away from his job, but Millie didn’t believe it. Sharky loved Siren of the Seas. He loved his job. No…something was terribly wrong. She needed to talk to Reef.

Annette wolfed down her food and pushed her chair back. “I hate to eat and run, but I’m on my way to a staff meeting. It’s all hands on deck today.”

Millie cast a concerned look at her friend. “Please promise me you’ll take care of yourself. There’s only one Annette, and I hate to see you work yourself into an emergency room.”

“I will.” Annette stacked her dirty dishes. “Amit is all over me to take it easy.”

“Good.” Millie watched her friend leave, offering up another prayer for her health. After finishing her breakfast, she dumped her dishes in the bin near the door.

She still had some free time before going over the final details of the private Welcome Aboard gathering for the diamond passengers, something Andy was rolling out for a summer test run.

The invitation-only party involved a champagne toast, unique logoed goodies, raffles for shore excursions, a complimentary chef’s table dinner for two and VIP ship tours. Andy had even convinced Nic to allow the VIPs to tour the bridge and captain’s quarters, something Majestic Cruise Lines had discontinued years ago amid safety concerns.

Millie’s first thought was to track down Reef to find out what he knew, but after yesterday’s lecture to mind her own business, she figured she should start with Donovan Sweeney instead.

She made her way behind the guest services desk, and when she reached Donovan’s office, his door was shut.
